About Douglas Roulston

  • Biography

Douglas Roulston (b. 1984) gained a BA (Hons) followed by a Master of Fine Art at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in 2008, where he focused on the work of 19th-century Romantic painters who first portrayed the dramatic scenery of Glencoe, Loch Katrine, and the wider Highlands. His practice is deeply rooted in Scottish myths and legends, which he interprets through oils, acrylics, and charcoal. Roulston’s landscapes are characterised by heightened drama and imaginative reconstruction—exaggerated rock formations, piercing shafts of light, turbulent skies, and reflective lochs that evoke the sublime power of nature. Human presence or man-made structures rarely appear, as his work centres on the awe and spirit of the natural world.
