Edith Martineau was born in 1842. Edith and her sister Gertrude were part of a small group of female artists closely associated with the Pre-Raphaelites. Together they held an exhibition of views around the family estate at Rothiemurchus, Aviemore, at The Modern Gallery, Bond Street, London, in 1906. Edith was the first woman to be admitted to The Royal Academy School, and was a prolific exhibitor at The Royal Academy, The Royal Watercolour Society, and elsewhere. Her father was Dr James... Edith Martineau was born in 1842. Edith and her sister Gertrude were part of a small group of female artists closely associated with the Pre-Raphaelites. Together they held an exhibition of views around the family estate at Rothiemurchus, Aviemore, at The Modern Gallery, Bond Street, London, in 1906. Edith was the first woman to be admitted to The Royal Academy School, and was a prolific exhibitor at The Royal Academy, The Royal Watercolour Society, and elsewhere. Her father was Dr James Martineau, the noted Unitarian theologian and minister. He moved to The Polchar, Rothiemurchus, Aviemore where Edith and her sister worked for many years.
