    An expedition artist, Edmond Smith attended Georgetown College (now University) in Washington DC and then was appointed a Captain's clerk in the U.S. Navy. In that service, he went to Valparaiso, Chile where he worked with Lieutenant James Gilliss on the U.S. Astronomical Expedition to the Southern Hemisphere. From 1849 to 1852, he lived in Santiago and in his spare time from astronomical measuring collected natural history specimens.

    Following the completion of his expedition work which included his illustrations, Edmond Smith went South to study the Araucanian Indians and subsequently wrote and illustrated a book: "The Araucanians; or, Notes of a Tour Among the Indian Tribes of Southern Chili".
