He was also professor of landscape painting, between 1872 and 1901. Born as the son of the philosopher Johann Peithner von Lichtenfels (1793-1866) in Vienna, he completed his studies under Franz Steinfeld and Thomas Ender at the local academy. He spent one year in Dusseldorf in 1857 and became a member of the artist's association 'Malkasten'. His students were, for instance, Ferdinand Andri, Wilhelm Bernatzik and Heinrich Tomec.
