    The German painter Edvard Frank is considered a prominent representative of the 'lost generation'. This group consisted of artists, musicians and writers from the years 1890 to 1914, whose works were classified as 'degenerate art' during the period of nationalism. Mostly, it included the second generation of expressionist artists, as well as artists from the New Objectivity. The art historian Rainer Zimmermann coined the term of 'expressive realism', which described some of them. The artists of the 'lost generation', in fact, had no unified style, but worked both in the expressive and realistic, as well as in the representational and abstract manner.
