    Frank Southgate was an English artist born in Hunstanton in 1872. He studied at the Slade School and trained under Sir Arthur Cope before contributing pictures to The Illustrated Sporting and Dramatic News. He became a member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1905 and exhibited there between 1904 and 1912. Southgate had a passion for wildfowling which gave him a great knowledge of his subject. He enjoyed the patronage of the 2nd Lord Montagu of Beaulieu who provided him with a studio. At the outbreak of WWI, he joined the Sportsman's Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers. He died in February 1916 after running two miles to a front line position and is buried in Northern France.
