He studied at the Slade School and trained under Sir Arthur Cope before contributing pictures to The Illustrated Sporting and Dramatic News. He became a member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1905 and exhibited there between 1904 and 1912. Southgate had a passion for wildfowling which gave him a great knowledge of his subject. He studied at the Slade School and trained under Sir Arthur Cope before contributing pictures to The Illustrated Sporting and Dramatic News. He became a member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1905 and exhibited there between 1904 and 1912. Southgate had a passion for wildfowling which gave him a great knowledge of his subject. He enjoyed the patronage of the 2nd Lord Montagu of Beaulieu who provided him with a studio. At the outbreak of WWI, he joined the Sportsman's Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers. He died in February 1916 after running two miles to a front line position and is buried in Northern France.
