    Born in Edinburgh the eldest son of Robert L. Alexander. He studied at the Royal Institution, Edinburgh, 1887-88, and later under Fremiet in Paris. When only seventeen years old he went to Tangier in the company of his father and Joseph Crawhall. He is known as an animal and bird painter, but also produced fine landscapes of his native Scotland, Egypt and Morocco.

    A great traveller, he visited Egypt in 1892 and stayed for four years living on a Nile houseboat near Cairo. Alexander was an early member of the Society of Scottish Artists and in 1902 he was elected an Associate of the Royal Scottish Academy and in 1913 a full member.
