About Elisabeth (Dame Elisabeth) Frink

  • Biography

Dame Elisabeth Frink was born in Thurlow, Suffolk, England in 1930 and died in Blandford Forum, Dorset, England in 1993. She attended Guildford School of Art and the Chelsea School of Art (England) and had her first exhibition in London at the age of 22. That occasion prompted the Tate Gallery to purchase one of her works.

Frink is often linked with the post-war school of British sculptors including Reg Butler, Bernard Meadows and Eduardo Paolozzi. However, in the case of Frink's subject matter, she shied away from abstraction and concentrated on dogs, horses, reliqious motifs and the figure. Her work is imbued with an emotional quality not often found in contemporary sculptors' works.
