    Painter Eloise Mcgill, 1868-1939, was born in Independence, Texas. She was a direct descendant of President James Knox Polk, and a grandniece of Judge R. E. B. Baylor, the founder of Baylor University, in Waco, Texas. She studied in San Antonio with Robert Jenkins Onderdonk, and in New York City with William Merritt Chase. She also studied landscape painting at the Cape Cod School of Art, in Massachusetts, and with Robert Reid in Paris, France. McGill was a member of the Southern States Art League; San Antonio Art League; and Texas Fine Arts Association.
