Enoch Bolles was an American painter of pin-up art and among the early 'glamour illustrators'. It is written that his "monthly lineup of all-American beauties precisely posed in wildly imaginative costumes did much to define the future of American pin-up illustration" (wikipedia). In this genre, he did illustrations for Francis Smilby's book Stolen Sweets (1981, Playboy Press), and Robert A. Brown's two Spiry card sets (Kitchen Sink Press), all of which brim with images of exuberant Bolles girls.

Sleek, naughty, these flapper-style dolls, with their bee-stung lips and voluptuous figures, lounge in lingerie and other unlikely forms of sex-fantasy dress-up as - exemplified by this blonde in fur coat and bathing suit.

Working generally in advertising, he created hundreds of illustrations for products from bread to cigarettes. He became famous for the 'windy girl' illustration for Zippo lighters, appearing in over 100 variations and also did work for Sun Maid Raisins.

Bolles was born in Boardman Florida, and with his family he settled in Harrington, New Jersey. He studied at the National Academy of Design, and in 1914 had his first illustration published including for joke books such as Judge and Puck. He was cover illustrator for Film Fun for 21 years beginning in 1921. This job ended when the magazine went out of business, the victim of the Postmaster General's campaign against 'salacious' material. He painted several hundred illustrations for pulp publications including Breezy Stories and New York Nights. None of this work is signed and much of it remains unattributed.

Enoch Bolles spent some of his later years in an insane asylum, where from 1943 to 1969, he was confined to Greystone Hospital in New Jersey. This treatment for psychological problems ended his public career, but he did portrait and other painting subjects for personal pleasures. After discharge from the hospital, he lived to 1976 when he died at age 93.
