About Enrique Atalaya

  • Biography

Enrique Atalaya was a Spanish artist. He began his training in Madrid and mainly cultivated genre and literary scenes. He showed a marked inclination towards the watercolor technique and expressed his postulates about realistic painting of the post-romantic movement of the second half of the 19th century.

In 1881, he settled permanently in Paris and participated in the Parisian Exposition of 1900. Atalaya devised a system for painting on a wide variety of grounds without using varnishes or oils. Most of his art is in the Museum of Fine Arts of Murcia, but he is also represented in other museums, such as the Prado Museum or the Art Renewal Center in New York
