    Ernest Luthi (1906-1983)

    A painter of agrarian Saskatchewan scenes, Ernest Luthi was born in Zeebach, Switzerland in 1906. His family immigrated to a homestead near Punnichy, Saskatchewan in 1914.

    He worked on the railroad after completing grade school in 1921 and later took correspondence classes in illustration from the Washington School of Art. He then took two years of night classes at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where he received his diploma in 1928. Luthi returned to Saskatchewan and worked as a sign painter, a house painter, and a carpenter to support his art and in 1951 he began painting full-time because of ill health.
