    The artist was born in Vila Viçosa in 1940 and is known for his treatment of themes related to the land, such as horses, carts, and agricultural implements. He received a scholarship from the Gulbenkian Foundation in 1974 and has held around sixty individual exhibitions since his first exhibition in 1955. He is represented in various museums, including the Museu de Chiado, the Museum of Contemporary Art of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, and the Museum of Fine Arts in Rio de Janeiro. He has won the Bienal de São Paulo Prize for scenery for the Gulbenkian Ballet and the Painting Prize from the Lisbon Academy of Fine Arts. A Espiga Pinto House-Museum is set to open in Vila Viçosa soon.
