    Fausto Sampaio was a notable contemporary painter from Portugal who was born in Anadia and was deaf-mute since childhood. He studied at the Instituto dos Surdos-Mudos in Porto and at Casa Pia, where he revealed his extraordinary artistic aptitudes. He attended the Paris Academies in the 1920s and returned to Lisbon in 1930. He was a disciple of Jules Renard and distinguished himself as a sensitive landscape artist, interpreting dim and luminous atmospheres. He also painted many former overseas possessions, namely São Tomé, Mozambique, and Timor. He is represented in the main National Museums and in the most important Portuguese private collections.
