    In 1851 Francis Sydney Muschamp was born in Hull and eventually moved to London. From 1870-1903 his works were exhibited in many renowned salons, such as the Royal Academy in London, the Royal Society of Artists in Birmingham or at Manchester City Gallery.

    Muschamp was strongly influenced by Neo-Classicism and especially by the artists Frederic Leighton and Lawrence Alma-Tadema. Fascinated by the past and literature (particularly Shakespearean), many of his works display Classical and Baroque motives as well as literary inspired topics, e.g. The Merchant of Venice or Ivanhoe.
