    Domingo Marqués began his training at the San Carlos School of Fine Arts in Valencia and in the workshop of Rafael Montesinos, who instilled in him his deep admiration for Ribera. In 1864 he moved to Madrid with the aim of furthering his studies at the Royal Academy of San Fernando in Madrid, and in 1868 he obtained the coveted pension for Rome.

    Already in 1866 he had been awarded with a third medal at the National Exhibition of Madrid for the painting A set in the 17th century, and the following year with a gold medal for the same work in the Valencian Regional, merits that helped him to achieve the pension for Italy.
