Francisco Gimeno Y Arasa was born in 1858 in Tortosa, Spain, and passed away in 1927. He began his training in Tortosa at the age of fourteen. In 1880, he settled in Barcelona and worked as a painter-decorator. At this time, as modernist painting gained widespread recognition, Gimeno distanced himself from the Catalan artistic scene and followed the traditions of the painters of the Golden Age. While many artists traveled to Paris, Gimeno went to Madrid in 1884, where he worked with Carlos de Haes, a master of realist landscape painting, and studied the works of the Prado Museum, particularly those of Velázquez.
