Frans de Hulst was a Dutch painter born in Naarden in 1602. He was likely a pupil of Salomon van Ruysdael and was registered in the Guild of San Luca in 1631. In 1642, he was appointed secretary of the guild. Hulst's mature works reflect the influence of Jan Josephsz van Goyen, and his landscapes are similar in style to those of his teacher, Salomon van Ruysdael. The painting in question is typical of Hulst's production and has been attributed to him based on a label placed on the reverse.
