About Frantisek Kavan

  • Biography

František Kaván studied landscape at the Academy of Prague with Julius Marak in the late 19th century. He was influenced by an exhibition in Prague featuring works of Antonin Chitussi. Kaván turned to Symbolism but was criticized by his teacher, leading him to leave the Academy. He received a gold medal for his "cloud paintings" at the Paris World Exhibition around 1900. Despite experimenting with Symbolism, he ultimately returned to pure landscape painting, focusing on winter scenes until his death.
