    Franz Rumpler (1848-1922) studied at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts where he was a pupil of Eduard von Engerth. After his studies he traveled to Italy and Paris. From the mid-1890s he held a professorship in history painting at the Academy.

    Many painters, including Moritz Coschell, Josef Floch, Wilhelm Victor Krausz, Kolo Moser and Josef Stoitzner were students of his. In 1897, he held his largest exhibition including 230 of his works.

    Rumpler painted mainly rural genre scenes but also nudes, portraits and nature studies influenced by impressionism. Works by Franz Rumpler are held in the collections of the Belvedere in Vienna, in the Liechtenstein Gemäldegalerie and the Modern Gallery in Prague.
