    Fred Stauffer grew up the son of a farmer and a teacher in Gümligen and Bern. After he had practiced teaching for some time, he decided in 1913 to become a painter and attended, until the outbreak of World War I, the character class of Walter Georgi at the Karlsruhe Academy.

    In 1915 he moved to Munich and became a pupil of Franz von Stuck. However, far more than the academic teaching he introduced him to the new French painting, the work of Munch and the German expressionists in the Thannhauser Gallery.

    In 1916 he returned to Switzerland and eventually settled - after frequent residence changes in the 1920s and 1930s - permanently in Wylergut in Bern. Here he developed a powerful late expressionist style.&n...
