About Frederick Horsman Varley

  • Biography

    Born in Sheffield, England, Frederick Varley spent most of his career in Canada where he became a member of the Group of Seven, painters dedicated to that country's native subject matter.

    Varley studied at the Sheffield School of Art in England to 1899, and from 1900 to 1902 at the Antwerp Academy in Belgium. In 1904, he moved to London, where he worked as an illustrator, and from 1909 to 1911, lived again in Sheffield.

    The next year, he moved to Toronto, Canada, and worked for a photo-engraving company. On the staff were artists with whom he formed the Group of Seven including James Edward MacDonald, Arthur Lismer, Frank Carmichael, Frank Johnston, and Tom Thomson. Together they became part-time l...
