Frederik Michael Ernst Fabritius de Tengnagel was born in Vejlevgaard, Fünen in 1781. Not until the age of 30 years he decided to become an artist and took private painting lessons with J. P. Moller. Of great importance for his art was the work of the Norwegian landscape painter of Romanticism Johan Christian Dahl, yet Tengnagel copied some of his motifs.
