    Friedrich August von Kaulbauch, also Fritz August von Kaulbach, was the son of the historical painter Theodor Friedrich Wilhelm Christian Kaulbach.

    He is well recorded for his mostly female portraits in the French style of the 19th century. He studied at the Royal School of Applied Arts in Nuremberg, under the guidance of August von Kreling and Karl Raupp. He later trained with his father.

    In 1871, he settled in Munich. His portraits capture almost exclusively people of German and American high society circles. In 1886, Kaulbach was appointed director of the Munich Academy. He was also a member of the Akademie der Künste in Berlin.
