    Friedrich Kallmorgen was born in Altona 1856. He was a painter and graphic artist in the tradition of the school of Barbizon. He had a preference for motifs from the Hamburg Harbour. Friedrich Kallmorgen received his first drawing lessons by his uncle Theodor Küchel.

    In 1875, he visited the preparatory class at the Düsseldorf Academy of Arts under Andreas Müller and Ernst Deger. Subsequently he moved to the academy of Art in Karlsruhe, where he studied under the landscape painter Hans Fredrik Gude and stylistically followed the Barbizon school, in combination with Dutch influences.
