    Friedrich Paul Nerly was the son of the painter Friedrich von Nerly (1807-1878) and received his first artistic training from his father. Born in Venice, he studied landscape painting under the painters Karl and Eugene von Blaas as well as Federico Moja and Pompeo Molmenti. The young artist was drawn to Rome, where he painted Italian landscapes, predominantly seasides, ports and towns, until 1915.
