Born in Kunming, Yunnan, Li Fuyuan studied under Wu Guanzhong in the Beijing Art Academy in 1957. While studying under the great master, Li inherited Wu's colour sense, which was aligned with Western painting. Li paints with vivid and saturated colours, which take on the functionality of form. Drawing inspiration from the countryside and forests of his hometown in Xishuangbana, Southern Yunnan province, Li's oeuvre is replete with animal subject matters, which culminate with the use of bold colours - made all the more vibrant by the contrast of black.
