    Born in Toronto, Ontario, George Franklin Arbuckle attended the Ontario College of Art (OCAD) where he studied with John William Beatty (1869-1941). Following graduation from OCAD, he succeeded in supporting himself through art: by selling his paintings and by teaching at Northern Vocational School and Franz Johnston's Art School at Georgian Bay.

    Even during leaner times, he relied on his art to land a job as a comercial artist, working in Montreal and Ottawa for the Bomac Engravers. His special knowledge of historical subjects contributed greatly to his stature as an illustrator.
