    Desmarées is one of the most eminent portraitists of Rococo art. He was a student of Martin van Meytens the Elder (1695 - 1770) in Stockholm, and from 1725 of Giovanni Batista Piazzetta (1682 - 1754) in Venice. He was later called to the Munich court where he was appointed as electoral court painter.

    His works are held in several palaces such as Augustusburg in Brühl, Clemensruhe Palace in Poppelsdorf, the Munich Residence, Nymphenburg Palace and the Pinakotheken of Munich and Madrid etc.

    A striking feature that can be found in all of his paintings is the distinctive chromaticity of the fabrics, shining like silk and painted in sfumato technique. This feature can also be found in this self-portrait. W...
