    Vereiskii, Georgii Semenovich

    Born July 18 (30), 1886, in the city of Proskurov, now the city of Khmel’nitskii, Ukrainian SSR; died Dec. 18, 1962, in Leningrad. Soviet graphic artist. People’s Artist of the RSFSR (1962) and member of the Academy of Arts of the USSR (1949).

    Vereiskii studied in St. Petersburg between 1913 and 1916 with M. V. Dobuzhinskii, B. M. Kustodiev, and A. P. Ostroumova-Lebedeva. From 1918 to 1930 he worked in the engraving section at the Hermitage.

    He was a master of the graphic portrait (lithographs, etchings, and drawings), which is distinguished by an accurate portrayal of the subject, emphasized by clarity of the drawing. He did several lands...
