About Gerhard Henning

  • Biography

The sculptor Gerhard Henning (1880-1967) worked as a designer for Royal Copenhagen from 1908 to 1925, with an interruption of several years. He is particularly well known for his fairy tale groups, often designed in the Rococo style with sensual erotic allusions. He often merged the world of fairy tales with mythology, as illustrated by the bronze sculpture "Cupid and Psyche" and the group "Fairytale III", which he also designed in 1914. Henning's figurative bonbonnière "Princess and the Pea", based on the fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen, was awarded the 1st class medal at the Paris Salon in 1912. Today, his figures can be found in collections of international museums.
