A resident of Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin in Door County, landscapist Gerhard Miller has had a long career of depicting the beauty of the scenery that is his natural environment.

He was the son of Adolph and Molly Miller of Sturgeon Bay and was educated at the University of Wisconsin. He began painting as a youngster when he was paralyzed from polio, a condition he partially overcame with exercise. He first used oil paint but in 1938 changed to watercolor, in part due to the influence of watercolorist Roy Mason of Batavia, New York and La Jolla, California.

Seeing a lack of art education in his area, Miller began teaching art classes, but primarily he has supported himself by the sale of his art work. With the proceeds, ...
