Already in 1926 Gerhard Swoboda moved with his family to Vienna. After an aborted medical studies, he studied from 1946 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, including as a master student of the sculptor Fritz Wotruba. Later he turned to painting.
His first solo exhibitions took place in 1949 in the gallery Würthle and 1951 in the Vienna Konzerthaus. At the Venice Biennale in 1950 he was represented as a sculptor and four years later as a graphic artist.
