From 1988 to 1991 Kunzel was a master student of Professor of Bernhard Heisig. From 1993 to 1998 he was a lecturer at the Department of Art Education at the University of Leipzig. In 2011 the Cultural Foundation of Saxony purchased a painting by Gero Künzel.
