About Gerrit (Gerard) Battem

  • Biography

Battem was probably trained by Rembrandt's pupil Abraham Furnerius, a cousin on his mother's side, with whom he undertook a journey along the Rhine in 1650-1654.

He worked mainly in the technique of gouache painting, created mountain landscapes, village and canal views, repeatedly in the cold season.

He is believed to have decorated the landscapes of Jacob van Ruisdael with figures in the 1670s.
