About Giuseppe Augusto Levis

  • Biography

    Giuseppe Augusto Levis (1873-1926)

Born in Chiomonte, Giuseppe Augusto Levis devoted himself to his passion of painting after a few years of studies at a law school; beginning in 1897, he presented his work at his first exhibitions.

His artistic output seems to be documented completely starting from 1900. From 1901 to 1902 he was a pupil of Lorenzo Delleani. In 1909 he undertook a journey to Holland and painted vedutas in Amsterdam and Rotterdam. In 1912, he went to Libya on the occasion of the War of Tripoli.

There he was inspired by the special North-African light; he also created erotic motifs, which were common at that time.

In his late work Levis painted expressive landscapes.
