About Giuseppe Varotti

  • Biography

Giuseppe Varotti was an Italian painter who acquired his first learning about the art of painting in his father's workshop and under the influence of Monti and Vittorio Maria Bigari. He worked almost exclusively in the city of Bologna for religious-themed commissions, with a close link to the tradition of Reni, Carracci and the various masters who succeeded them in the city. In some half-length representations of Madonnas and saints in adoration of the Child, he shows particular attention to the painter Elisabetta Sirani. Varotti's pictorial production is quite evident of a Venetian vein, a Veronesian and neo-sixteenth-century inspiration reminiscent of Sebastiano Ricci.
