He worked almost exclusively in the city of Bologna for religious-themed commissions, with a close link to the tradition of Reni, Carracci and the various masters who succeeded them in the city. In some half-length representations of Madonnas and saints in adoration of the Child, he shows particular attention to the painter Elisabetta Sirani. Varotti's pictorial production is quite evident of a Venetian vein, a Veronesian and neo-sixteenth-century inspiration reminiscent of Sebastiano Ricci.
