About Gunnar S Gundersen

  • Biography

Gunnar S. Gundersen was a leading figure in Norwegian art and a pioneer of modern, nonfigurative painting. At a time when such approaches faced considerable resistance from critics, Gundersen and his contemporaries persevered, driven by both skill and determinaton, to establish this new artistic language. While many artists shared similar styles during the 1950s and 60s, Gundersen gradually developed his own distinctive visual expression by the 1970s. He taught at the Norwegian Institute of Technology (NTH) in Trondheim, where he became especially interested in how viewers perceive color and form. His teaching often involved explorations and studies into visual perception, which simultaneously deeply influenced his artistic practice.
