About Gustaf Carlstrom

  • Biography

Gustaf Carlström, born in 1896 in Gothenburg, Sweden, was a renowned artist known for his realistic style of painting inspired by his travels to Spain, France, and Italy. He shifted from imaginative works to more down-to-earth themes, such as plein air painting and still life. Carlström also gained recognition for his portrait works and commissioned pieces, including a large painting for the Swedish American Line's m/s Stockholm II. Despite the ship's unfortunate loss in a fire, his painting "Life in a Bohuslän fishing village" showcases his skill and diverse choice of motifs. Throughout the 1920s and 30s, Carlström depicted social themes in his art, such as burlesque dance scenes and peasant weddings.
