About Gustaf Lundberg

  • Biography

The artist Gustaf Lundberg was born in 1695. He was raised by his grandfather Frederick Richter who was a goldsmith in Stockholm. After completing his studies at Uppsala University, Lundberg apprenticed to the court painter David von Krafft.

Like most artists at this time, he traveled eventually to Paris where he studied with the great masters Rigaud, Largillière and Troy, but it was the artist Rosalba Carriera that would affect his style and technique most. She visited Paris in 1720-21 and was the one who introduced pastel which immediately became fashionable. Across Europe, the rumor spread about her brilliant pastel paintings and many prominent celebrities came to have their portraits painted by her.
