He financed his life in France with the sales of his pictures there and only returned to his family home in Dumfriesshire a couple of years before his death. His watercolors show the influences and qualities that brought his father success, and he retained lifelong friendships with some of the Kirkcudbright group. He died in the mid-20th century.
