Hanny Fries was a Swiss artist born in Zurich in 1918. Hanny received her first art lessons from her father, Willy Fries, who was also a painter. Hanny Fries studied at the Zurich School of Applied Arts and the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Geneva.

Fries worked as a freelance artist in Geneva and Zurich, and also had her own studio in Paris. Fries was a member of the Society of Swiss Painters and Sculptors, and served on the Federal Art Commission and the board of the Zurich Art Society.
