Hedwig Holtz-Sommer was born in Berlin 1901 and passed away in 1970 in Wustrow. Holtz-Sommer was a German painter of the lost generation. From 1927 to 1929 Hedwig studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Weimar with Hugo Gugg, Fritz Feigler and Walther Klemm. In 1934 she married the painter Erich Theodor Holtz, since working in Wustrow in the fish country. In 1941 she received a scholarship from the German Albrecht Durer Foundation. After the war, she became a member of the Mecklenburg artist collective, and later the artist collective Ahrenshoop.
