    Hendrik Willem Schweickhardt was born on April 3, 1746 in Hamm, Germany. He lived in The Hague from June 1774 where he was the pupil of Hieronymus Lapis (1723-1798). In 1787 he moved to England. He exhibited at the Royal Academy right up until his death in 1796.

    Schweickhardt, influenced by the Dutch seventeenth-century landscape painters, became particularly known for his winter scenes with figures and animals. The influence of Aelbert Cuyp (1620-1691) in Schweickhardt’s work is particularly evident. Schweickhardt pupils included Dutch painter Pieter Gaal (1770-1819) and his daughter Katharina Wilhelmina Schweickhardt.
