    Born in London, England, Henry Gitten was a painter known especially for landscapes, which he exhibited in London galleries between 1835 and 1849. By 1850, he was in the United States, living in Brooklyn. The next year he exhibited at the American Art Union, and from 1850 to 1854, he entered paintings at the National Academy of Design annual exhibitions. He also went to New Hampshire, where he painted in the White Mountains: Kearsarge Mountain (1850 and Recollection of New Hampshire Scenery (1851).
