Herbert Brandl was born in 1959, in Graz, Austria. He studied at the University of Applied Arts with Herbert Tasquil and Peter Weibel in 1978. In 1980, Herbert Brandl was awarded the Styrian State Prize for Fine Arts in Graz. In 1984, Herbert made his first major exhibition at the "Neue Galerie am Landesmuseum Joanneum" in Graz.

Herbert's large-format oil paintings, usually composed of diptychs and triptychs, had a positive reception from the beginning in the art world. The abstract landscapes and still life were determined by a pasty and dynamic paint application. In his early works there was a high degree of emotionality.
