Heri Dono was born in Jakarta in 1960. Heri studied at the Indonesian Institute of Art in Yogyakarta for seven years (1980-1987), winning the Best Painting Prize in 1981. Just before graduation, Heri Dono deliberately dropped out of this school on principle. He said, “No institution can guarantee that with a certificate, you can be an artist. So I did an experiment for myself to see if I did not get a certificate — could I still be an artist?” Heri Dono's greatest accolade was winning Belgium's Prince Claus Award in 1998.
