    Herman Frederik Carel ten Kate (1822-1891) Herman ten Kate was a pupil of Cornelis Kruseman. He also studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague from 1841 to 1842 and traveled Belgium, Germany, Italy and France.

    The artist lived in The Hague, Amsterdam and Harlem. Ten Kate was repeatedly involved in the exhibitions of the Dutch watercolorists.

    Willem III of the Netherlands was a friend of his and he advised him in his selection of ‘Koninkl. Subsidies’ for young artists. Next to his genre pieces his historicizing soldier pieces from the period of the Thirty and the Eighty Years’ Wars were especially successful.
