    Hermann Eschke was born in 1823. He studied at the Berlin Academy before taking numerous study trips to Normandy, Brittany, the Pyrenees and the Mediterranean from 1850, where he found the motifs that he later realized in his Berlin studio.

    Eschke's painting, which relied on dramatic effects, was very popular with his contemporaries and brought him many students, some of whom became important painters themselves, including: Louis Douzette, Moritz Erdmann, Walter Moras, Carl Saltzmann, Alexander Kircher, Fritz Sturm and Ernst Koerner....
