    Born on May 3, 1953, in Sidi Daoud, Algeria, Hocine Ziani spent his early years in cultural isolation during the Algerian revolution. In 1964, two years after Algeria’s independence, he enrolled in school at age 11 and began drawing as a self-taught artist.

    Ziani held his first solo exhibition in 1979 in Algiers and soon co-founded the Group of 35, alongside prominent Algerian artists such as Issiakhem, Temam, Khadda, and Denis Martinez. His early works focused on historical scenes, often rendered in large formats with blurred open spaces that evoke depth and atmosphere.
